This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 14 talks about course books and lesson materials. Course books consist of student’s book, workbook, cassettes, teacher’s book, videos and graded reading books. This unit shows the four different options for course book use. They are: omit, replace, supplement and adapt.
I have learnt the advantages and disadvantages of using course books. I have learnt how to use course books in a better way. I have learnt how to analyse a course book according to certain factors which are: price, availability, design, methodology, skills, difficulty, syllabus, topic and teacher’s guide.
I have also learnt the difference between authentic and created materials and that teachers have to balance between them. Authentic materials are anything a native speaker would hear or read such as newspapers, songs, poems etc. Created materials are things designed by teachers to replace or supplement materials from a course book such as flashcards, crosswords, word search puzzles etc.
