This was a very short lesson. It discussed the differences between authentic and created materials, plus their advantages and disadvantages. For example, authentic material can inspire confidence in students when it is used successfully; however, authentic material also lacks a specificity. Created materials, on the other hand, can be tailored to a student's problems and level. Authentic material and created material should be used in mixed balance. Course books, too, should be used in mixed balance. Material from the book should be used and followed, but teacher's shouldn't rely on it. Instead, it should be used as an aide and for rough guidelines, but specific issues should be dealt with creatively. Omit, replace, implement, and adapt are the four ways in which course material can be manipulated for use by a teacher when its original form is not adequate. Course books should also be carefully chosen, taking into consideration things like price, design, methodology, and difficulty.
