I found that memorizing the rules for reported speech and conditional tenses is much easier said than done. I found these rules challenging in practice, when critically thinking about which sentence would be the correct form of reported speech. It is difficult for two parts: you have to identify which verb tense is presented as reported speech, and then, you have to know the rule for how to turn the direct speech into reported speech. In my experience, I find that casual native speakers of English most likely do not follow these rules in everyday speech. However, with the rules, the speech sounds more formal – it is correct English. An Activate phase exercise that came to mind is a journalism activity because the field of journalism is full of opportunities for reported speech (i.e., the role of a reporter). In a writing exercise, a journalist would have to know these proper rules to write grammatically correct English. I would want my students to practice these same abilities.
