Unit twelves focuses on teaching productive skills. Two productive skills are: speaking and writing. The unit differentiates between fluency & accuracy exercises and the time in which they generally occur, as well as stating both are equally important. Various examples of speaking activities are listed, and a number of possible reasons as to why students are hesitant and reluctant to speak are mentioned, along with suggestions in which to overcome those hurdles. A standard creative speaking activity is listed, as well as some guidelines for the lesson that should be adhered to.
Writing skills differ from speaking skills, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and handwriting all being factors that should be considered. The unit cites people from countries whose alphabets differ from the English one can experience difficulties in this area, something which the teacher needs to be aware of. Finally, the unit discusses games, and the role they can play in creating a better learning environment.
