This unit focuses on managing classes, and it covers many aspects of the topic, including how eye contact, body gestures, the use of the voice, using students' names, grouping students and classroom arrangements play important roles in the success of class management. The unit also discusses teacher talking time (TTT) and student talking time (STT), and states the advantages and disadvantages of each of these topics in the classroom. Establishing rapport is also an important aspect of class management, and this unit provides pointers to help establish class rapport and class spirit, such as choosing materials and activities that involve the students talking to each other and sharing personal opinions and ideas. Discipline is also discussed, as is dealing with problem behavior. The unit is important because by understanding and applying these many ideas, the teacher can help the students learn more effectively and the teacher can inspire greater confidence in the students as well.
