This 1st Unit concentrates on defining the learner and teacher roles, their potential backgrounds and motivations and what makes for the most efficient and enjoyable interaction between them. Issues of professionalism, behaviour and self-awareness are raised, explained and explored. Most teachers and learners in any EFL situation will be broadly positively motivated but there are many procedural pitfalls and unhelpful habits each party can easily fall into. The teacher has responsibility for the effective management of both ends of the 'arc': themself as well as each of their learners. No teacher should ever be so totally absorbed in the flow and buzz of people enjoying developing their communicative skills and competences, that they are not constantly monitoring how each student is progressing, how they learn best, what they could benefit from next etc. No doubt the various aspects and levels of this transaction will be analysed in more depth & detail in future modules of the course.
