Unit 3 on course development showed how graded level tests help placing students at different levels according to their ability. The practicality of a needs analysis, needs negociation and syllabus design was then outlined and limiting factors to this design were stated. The topic of syllabus design was looked at more closely , showing different theories as to what a syllabus should be designed around. The last three sections of this unit helped me to understand the difference between and the necessity of student assessment, examinations and course evaluation and how to approach each one.
While studying unit 3, I realised the importance of gathering information on the course to be given before designing a syllabus for it. The sample syllabus on page 11 was very practical in as it gave me a clearer understanding of how a course should be broken down. The part on course evaluation helped me to see how feedback on the syllabus, materials and teaching style can be used to make improvements.
