Assessing a student's language level can be done in three separate ways - with tutorials, evaluation by the students, or by testing. Placement tests and diagnostic tests are undertaken at the start of the course, and are used to form groups at the same level, and to assess what students do and don't know. Progress tests are administered to assess student's progress of the work covered, and can be undertaken in a variety of different stages, depending on the course or the school. Practice tests are used to assess how close students are to the required standards and to adjust to the structure of an exam. External exams are not course related but are used to measure English proficiency according to specific standards. Achievement tests can be taken by students at the end of year or course to measure proficiency in a course related context. External exams include TOEFL, IELTS and TOEIC which are used to judge language proficiency. Cambridge assessment includes KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE and ESOL.
