This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit various ideas on classroom methodology were introduced, followed by an in-depth discussion on how to use the Engage-Study-Activate (ESA) method. This method is thought by the writers to be a good method for new teachers. I learned that, while this method is useful, it does not always need to be E-S-A in a straight-arrow approach but can go back and forth between the various stages. The most important aspect of this style is to begin with engaging and end with activating. The steps in between are flexible and can be repeated. I also learned the importance of timely and gently given correction. I appreciate that the start and end of a good ESA lesson are not heavily emphasizing correction because this allows students to become comfortable in what they are learning. Low anxiety leads to the best language learning. This unit also discussed many ideas for activities that fit nicely into each stage of an ESA lesson. This will make for a good reference later on during lesson planning.
