The videos offered a great \"birds-eye view\" look at a good vs. bad exemplar of teaching English as a foreign language. I appreciated that each video had the same students and teacher, which allowed for strong contrast between the teacher's different attitudes and students' subsequent responses. In the first video, the teacher speaks in a monotonous tone, and repeats over and over that \"modal auxiliary verbs are EASY,\" which quickly creates an aura of intimidation amongst the students who are too afraid to answer the instructor's questions. In contrast, the positive energy of the instructor in the second lesson, along with clear explanations and thorough engagement of students through getting to know their names, calling on students, and checking on students during independent work, makes the difference between a confused class and a focused class. Having seen these videos, I imagine it will be easier to tell apart these two modes of behavior while embarking on my own teaching adventures.
