This lesson is all about evaluation and testing. Some of the different types of tests are placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests, and external exams. Placement tests, as their name suggests, are for the purpose of placing a student in the appropriate class according to their language ability. They are given to students before beginning a course and usually start with simple questions and become increasingly difficult. Progress tests are used to periodically gauge the progress of the students. Diagnostic tests are similar to progress test and are used to help the teacher prepare lessons tailored to target the class’s areas of weakness. Practice tests are for the purpose of preparing for external exams, and should therefor follow the format and structure of the particular exam they are in preparation for. There are a variety of external exams with different focuses such as entering American universities, or qualifying for working at an English speaking business.
