I have taken classes to learn two foreign languages and had six different instructors, both good and bad. I have found that the most important thing a teacher can do to help students learn is to create a safe, encouraging environment. This allows students to be able to comfortably practice speaking, ask questions, and take risks with the language without the fear of being belittled for mistakes. The instructor in the second lesson did this by smiling, using students' names, saying things like \"nearly\" when a student gives the wrong answer, praising students who take risks answering questions, using humor, and having an all-around positive demeanor. The lesson was well planned and used a variety of teaching techniques and aids, such as writing on the board, miming, and pictures. He successfully engaged students in the beginning to get them speaking, gave examples before having students complete worksheets in the study phase, and let them creatively use English in the activate phase at the end.
