As a person who went through private and public schools during my adolescence, I can sadly say that even native speakers teaching other native speakers struggle with grammar. I believe many native speakers' sense of proper grammar comes from what \"sounds\" right but are unable to explain it. I believe it's important for teachers to be able to have a deeper grasp on grammar beyond what sounds correct because there will be times when they must correct students' grammar, regardless of the primary subject matter. To this day, 20 years later, I remember my high school English teacher stating that she hated teaching grammar and wouldn't do so unless we (her students) made horrendous and continuous errors. A teacher's attitude, expressed or perceived, towards a particular topic sticks with a student and potentially shapes their opinion. While we all have opinions, they don't all need to be expressed - especially the negative ones. For this could infringe a student's desire and ability to learn.
