This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The content of Unit 13 is Teaching Pronunciation and Phonology, where pronunciation is about the individual sounds and rise and fall of speech in a sentence, and phonology is the science and study of the physical properties of sounds. Intonation is the variation of volume and pitch in a sentence, and stress is the emphasis put on individual words.
The Phonemic Alphabet with the symbols of the International Phonemic Alphabet chart is introduced, with exercise in its use.
There is a section on Articulation, including the speech organs, the place and manner of articulation and a chart summarising articulation of consonants. This is followed by suggestions on how and when to teach pronunciation.
I have had some classroom experience teaching with phonetics. However, this unit once again widens my horizon introducing phonology as the science of sounds, and the International Phonemic Alphabet. I continue to be impressed how each unit packs so much information into a compact size in an accessible form.
