This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 20 was a round-up of tips and reminders for beginning teachers. Potential problems were touched upon, such as large classes, differing skill levels, and students' use of their first language in the English class. Suggestions were offered for how to deal with each of these problems. Activities were listed that could be used to build rapport between the students, as well as between the teacher and students. \"Warmers\" were also mentioned, such as hangman, pictionary, tongue twisters, and memory games.
Unit 20 discusses the importance of finding out the English level of each individual class member, but it provides no guidance on how to do this. Even though Unit 15 touched on placement and diagnostic tests, there was not enough information provided to help a new teacher access or design such assessments. Looking back on this course in its entirety, I think I have learned a great deal and feel confident about being able to access most of the materials I will need for my ESL teaching.
