This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 7 covers teaching receptive skills, reading and listening, which are listed as 2 of the 4 receptive skills required to learn any language. While not covered in this unit the other 2 skills of speaking and writing are noted as being equally important, as is the need to teach a balance of all receptive skills in any given lesson. I found the information regarding why and how we read and listen very interesting, as it’s not something I have thought about in detail before.
I am currently learning Slovene and I often find myself skimming when reading in Slovene language as my vocabulary skills are far higher than my ability the read or create fully connected sentences meaning I also often use predictive skills to fill the gaps in my understanding. I am sure an international student learning English would also adapt their reading skills in a similar manner so being aware and teaching in a way to help strengthen all skills used when reading and listening would greatly benefit the students.
