In this unit, I studied guidelines and techniques for teaching writing and speaking, which collectively are know as productive skills. Accuracy activities - typically part of the study phase - focus on the production of correct language, whereas fluency activities - typically part of the activate phase - focus on the flow and effectiveness of communication. Students may be reluctant to speak in the classroom, so it is important for the teacher to create a non-threatening environment in which to speak and to encourage speaking through the use of pair-work and guided practice, among other techniques. For writing, the primary considerations are spelling, layout and punctuation. These skills can be trained through extensive reading of a wide variety of written works and through writing, especially creative writing. For training productive skills in general, many games can be adapted for language-learning purposes. Games can effectively get students to practice productive skills in an engaging, fun way.
