Reading and listening are key components to advancing language skills. When the students have to read and listen is when their English is truly put to the test, so it is best to prepare them for these moments. It is not only important to teach them as many words and phrases as possible, it's also important to teach them how to use context clues to interpret words and phrases they haven't heard before. Personally, I think that is the most important thing to teach when it comes to reading and listening. This is because they will often run into unfamiliar words, as it is impossible to teach them everything. They need to learn how to figure it out themselves, especially when there isn't a teacher there to give them an answer on the spot. Topics should be both interesting and practical, and comprehension tasks should not be too easy as it will not better their skills and will not boost their confidence. Students always feel a great sense of accomplishment when they've figured out something on their own.
