When teaching a new language to a class, teachers must differentiate between vocabulary, grammar, and language functions, and then consider which ESA format is most appropriate. When teaching vocabulary, for example, a straight arrow lesson can be very effective, having the students use words they already know in the engage phase, learn new terms related to their earlier discussions in the study phase, and put these new terms into use during the activate stage. All of this wile focusing on meaning, use, pronunciation, etc. However, when teaching functions-based lessions, like grammar forms and language functions, a boomerang or patchwork lesson can be more useful. By studying and activating new functions more than once, they are better reinforced and contextualized for students. As with any lesson, it is important to remember that during the engage phase, students may not feel comfortable sharing personal information on certain topics, so teachers should be able to share about themselves if necessary.
