In this unit it is pointed out that there are 4 things students need to do with a new language; that is; be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it's constructed and be able to practice and produce it. Vocabulary, grammar and functions will assist the student in the four requirements for the language. Vocabulary is especially important at the early stage of learning a new language when the students are still motivated to learn new words that they need to get by in the language in order to be able to understand others and to express their own ideas. Grammar is a method the student will learn to use for generating useful sentences from the vocabulary they know, and function is the reason we use a language and it what manner the language is used. It is also mentioned that, lessons that are specifically targeted to grammar or vocabulary commonly use the 'straight arrow' ESA approach, whereas functions-based lessons are more commonly approached with 'boomerang' or 'patchwork' ESA structures.
