This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I feel I have a solid understanding of testing and evaluating, although I don't give many tests to my students. I think practice tests for external exams are an important part of preparation for students, yet I prefer a tutorial style of evaluation. I do like to conduct placement and diagnostic tests, but in a laid back atmosphere in which I aid the students. I feel like a lot of adult learners are stressed out in a new learning environment and feel vulnerable when taking in a second, or sometimes third, language.
I did find the information on universal or standardized tests and their purposes very interesting. I would like to have more of a working knowledge of the Cambridge tests and the IELTS examination. I think it is important to have standardized ways of measuring English-language proficiency and class time should lend itself to successfully acquiring a new language level. Nonetheless, I think engaging an engaging teaching style can achieve this without the pressure of too often testing students.
