This unit covered the four past tense verb structures. First is the past simple which is formed by adding ed to the end of the verb. Some verb forms in the past are irregular. This tense is used to talk about a completed action in the past at a set time frame. Past Continuous tense is used when a certain action was in progress at a particular time in the past. It is formed by using a form of was/were along with the present participle verb form. The past perfect tense is formed by using the auxilary verb had along with the verb in the past participle (verb + ed). It is used when a past action and a related past action before that has taken place. The final verb form is the Past Perfect Continuous tense. Use it to communicate a continuing action in the past up until an additional action in the past takes place. It is formed by using the aux verb had + been + verb with ing added on to it. There are several activities that can be used to teach these concepts, from mimes, to picture story telling.
