Communication between humans is an extremely complex and ever-changing phenomenon, but there are certain generalizations that we can make about the majority of communicative events and these will have particular relevance for the learning and teaching of languages. Learning to speak a foreign language is much more complex than knowing its grammatical and semantic rules. It involves both command of certain skills and several different types of knowledge.The productive skills are speaking and writing, because learners doing these need to produce language. They are also known as active skills. They can be compared with the receptive skills of listening and reading. While writing and speaking are considered productive skills (as opposed to listening and reading, the receptive language skills), both require different teaching methodologies and pose different pedagogical difficulties. The main goal of most, if not all, ESL students is to acquire language skills that will enable them to communicate effectively.
