Understanding (and memorizing) the strucuture and the four different aspects of this tense is helpful when a teacher needs to explain the usage or make corrections. The unit also presents the most common mistakes made by students, which I could indeed relate to those of my memories from past travel experiences as being similar. Being prepared for the most common mistakes can be a powerful tool to build up confidance when teaching.This unit reviews the past tenses, which includes past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. The past simple tense is usually formed by adding \"ed\" or \"d\" to the base form, but there are irregular past simple verbs that must be memorized. The continuous tenses use a verb + \"ing\" in the form, while the perfect tenses contain \"had\" in the form.
The past simple tense is used to talk about a past action either when a time is expressly given or when it is clear that the action took place in the past. For example, \"The man grew up in New York.\
