I have understood the differences among the four kinds of conditionals and the changes in verb tenses for reported speech. Like other aspects of EFL learning, these are two topics wherein students can experience much confusion and difficulty. Teachers must be able to explain the differences well and make the ideas clearer for the students, hence the need for us to fully understand these topics by heart.
I have seen the sample teaching ideas in the EFL materials I currently use for my classes and they have proven useful and effective in teaching conditionals.
On the other hand, using reported speech is another way for students to practice/apply what they have learned on the different verb tenses. Using the chart shown in the unit material, students can practice changing the verb tense from direct speech to reported speech. I would personally give lots of exercises to my students on this topic so they can master the transition from direct to reported speech and be able to apply it in actual conversations.
