This unit covered the four basic language skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. Reading and listening are receptive skills; speaking and writing are productive skills. We read for many different reasons, sometimes for pleasure and sometimes for a purpose. Many skills are used in reading and listening such as the ability to predict content, scanning for specific information, skimming for the general idea, detailed understanding, and the ability to deduce meaning from content.
Learning language through reading and listening can be aided by proper selection of text and pre- teaching vocabulary. As teachers, we should select topics that cater to a variety of interests in the classroom. We should make the lesson engaging and help the students be motivated to participate. We should choose appropriate tasks, and a lesson plan that best fits the material while also meeting the needs of the students. We can vary our approach and material to keep the classroom engaging and prevent predictability.
