Unit 9 considered the issue of course materials -- the various kinds of materials, their comparative advantages and disadvantages, and the optimal strategies for ensuring that available materials are utilized in the most effective manner. The author distinguished between “authentic†materials (anything intended for normal use by fluent speakers) and \"created\" materials (anything designed for use by language learners). Authentic materials are often more enagaging, and may tend to enhance student confidence (when understood), but are also generally more difficult and less targeted to the needs of the learner. Created materials can be designed by the teacher to fit with precision the level of a particular class. Coursebooks are another resource that may prove useful in many contexts but, as the author explains, they are best treated with flexibility: a teacher may find it necessary to omit, supplement, or otherwise revise coursebok materials in order the better to suit them to the needs of students.
