This unit discusses evaluation and assessment through testing. It describes the various forms of evaluation, whether it is to place students in compatible level groups at the start of the course, to measure their progress in class, evaluate the topics that the students know, and to prepare students for external examination. The unit goes on to describe the most popular external examinations and what they measure.
I was quite surprised to find that this is the shortest unit. There is so little consensus as to what the best methods of assessment are, particularly what methods can be used to evaluate understanding with a large group and on the spot that does not include testing. This is one of my greater difficulties and I hoped this unit would shed some light on how to best tackle this problem. The unit begins by stating that many teachers have problems with testing in general. While I don’t think testing is useless, I would have liked to see a longer overview about the different assessment methodologies.
