This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Pronunciation is often neglected by teachers because it can be difficult for native speakers themselves to make sense of it - Why does \"broth\" sound different in \"brother,\" and why is \"heard\" pronounced differently from \"beard?\" Pronunciation, however, is critical for English students, not only to help them sound intelligent, but also to allow them to actually communicate their points. Phonology has a lot of components, like intonation, stress, and rhythm, and it can be extremely difficult for students to put all of these together, especially because there isn't always a hard and fast rule. While a good teacher will know the phonetic alphabet, he or she does not have to use phonetic script to teach pronunciation (In fact, it's probably better to use alternatives). Instead, teachers can mouth words for students to copy (and apply knowledge of how to configure one's mouth to create certain sounds), use gestures to indicate intonation or stress, and write out basic examples on the board to break it down.
