This unit covered phonology. It discussed how we make the sounds used in the English language. Stress, intonation, and the phonemic alphabet were covered among other things. I think the most important aspect that I learned from this unit is how vital it can be to truly teach pronunciation to students and how that task is really very complicated and involves many elements. In language courses I've taken, pronunciation was only taught on a shallow level. It was never the focus of a lesson. Students were expected to glean pronunciation while actively studying grammar. I see now how I was missing out on learning another language on a deeper level that could help to eliminate my accent. Some languages do not utilize some sounds that are used in English, such as the \"th\" sound. For me to teach a student to recognize or hear this sound and then create it themselves, it is important that I know how this sound is made and be able to explain to someone how this sound is made in a way that they can understand.
