This unit discusses special considerations needed for teaching specific groups of people. When teaching beginner students, teachers need to determine what type of beginner the students are and focus on using simple and clear language, being encouraging (not over-correcting), making sure English is used as much as possible, and using visual cues. Adult learners have different motivations and challenges compared to young learners. Young learners may be less motivated and more easily distracted but can usually pick up the language more quickly. Working one-on-one with students also limit some classroom activities but allows the teacher to focus on the individual’s needs and interests. Finally, teaching business English does not necessarily require expertise in the business field but is does come with other challenges such as poor attendance, a variety of learning levels, and tired learners. Thus teachers of business English should over-prepare and conduct a needs assessment to establish clear communal goals.
