In order to effectively manage a class, a teacher must be flexible and change their role according to the situational needs of students and subject material. To do so, a teacher must be aware of the pros and cons of different organizational methods. Smaller classes, for instance, may benefit from a circular or horseshoe style seating arrangement, as it creates a more intimate setting which allows students to feel more comfortable. Larger classes, however, may be more likely to benefit from a traditional seating arrangement which allows the teacher to direct the attention of students. Group work allows students to work out ideas with their classmates and receive more personal attention from the teacher, but it can also lead to a large amount of distracting noise and lead to students speaking in their native language rather than English. Above all, it is important to allow students to feel comfortable and ready to learn in class while maintaining discipline and orderliness so that the class can proceed as planned.
