Throughout this Unit I have learned and reviewed many teaching techniques, philosophies and formats for structuring vocabulary and grammatical acquisition in my future classroom. Though I personally believe that learning the origins of words is, indeed, important - because memorizing / understanding the common latin roots, prefixes and suffixes can lead to understanding words that one has never come across before, I agree that the meaning correct usage of the word take precedence within the classroom. Whereas, I respect the format and underlying philosophy of prioritizing usability over etymology within the early stages of acquisition, I also firmly believe that a firm basic understanding of etymology can make English less intimidating as a foreign language because the very mixed ethnic and intercultural background our language, particularly the influences from the French, Latin and Spanish languages, explains the rather large number of irregular pronunciations and verbs conjugations present within modern English.
