This unit focuses on receptive skills for reading and learning. I was taught the purposes for listening and reading as well as how students read and learn. Something I found very important that I learned from this section was the specialist skills that learners employ when reading or listening, especially the idea that skimming and scanning are classified as two different skills, each with their own purpose. I also learned about pre-teaching vocabulary and how teaching difficult language before a lesson can allow students to more easily learn new language. However, you must be selective in what you are pre-teaching as students still need to discover language on their own. Ideally, you would like a student to grasp concepts without having to know every word, but the student does need to be informed enough in order to get through the lesson naturally and without much resistance. This section did a great job of emphasizing the need for balance when pre-teaching or just creating general lessons to appeal to the class.
