One main benefit to using a well-selected course book is that it will contain a syllabus that has been tested to be effective. The disadvantage is that it is not specifically tailored for any particular group of students. Teachers can use a coursebook as a general trajectory for teaching while still supplementing or substituting with additional authentic or created materials so that students can benefit from having a wider, more relevant pool of information and activities than may be available in the course book alone. Some authentic materials can include: a local menu, a tour guide, a news broadcast or radio show. These need to be selected carefully to ensure that they are at the right level for the class. Using authentic material can help students gain more confidence in real life situations. Created materials, such as crosswords and word search puzzles, can include a wide range of fun and interesting activities to help students practice language in a way that is more level graded than authentic materials.
