Teachers have many roles to juggle and must be flexible to meet the needs of their students. The age, past learning experiences, and motivations of their students have to be considered when organizing and facilitating a class. A willingness to adapt to what is working with students and what isn't is paramount. In my own private piano teaching I often am amazed at how effective an approach can be with one student, only to fail to connect with another because of a slight age difference or simply because of the influence of past learning experiences.
I imagine it can be difficult trying to adapt to the needs of a whole classroom of students, but transitioning fluidly between roles (manager, facilitator, assessor, model, etc.) is an important concept to keep in mind. With many jobs it can be easy to settle into a rut of how we believe things should be done, but developing a strong rapport with our students and tailoring a class to suit their level and motivations can bring about success, even though it is challenging.
