In this unit I learned about the role of course books and lesson materials in the classroom. I've learned that it is important to not simply rely on a coursebook but to add additional resources created by the teacher that can reinforce understanding and test the student's on their newly found skills. Some of the advantages of course books include that it provides a balanced mix of vocabulary, grammar and skills work, it continually practices language already introduced (therefore reinforcing and expanding the students knowledge). Some of the disadvantages of course books are that it does not always fit the specific needs and interests of the class (it may be too difficult or too easy for some students), It can make teachers lazy and less likely to find creative ways to teach lessons, and the student's may dislike the look and be reluctant to use it. The best way to use a coursebook is to mix it up with the teacher's own creative ideas and activities in order to prevent student's from becoming bored and uninterested.
