Sometimes, parts of speech is difficult for students, especially young kids, to understand.They can write correct sentences and they can understand passages. However, it will not be easy for them to tell the parts of speech. I think that's because they are kind of abstract concepts for them. Therefore, I believe when we teach students this part of grammar, the most important thing is to understand the students' cognition, to think if they are able to understand it. For example, when I taught middle school students,parts of speech is easier for them. Nevertheless, when I gave lessons to Grade 1 children in primary school, they can understand what a noun is, but they felt confused when I said the was an article.
Thus, I think the ability to say, write, and understand English sentences correctly is also of great importance for students to learn parts of speech.
Another important thing is we, as teachers, should have a full understanding of parts of speech. If we are confused, we will not teach the students clearly.
