This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The final unit looks at common problems any teacher might encounter during their English teaching, and suggests ways of dealing with them.
A special emphasis is given to the very first lesson you have with a new individual student or group. The main undertaking is to get to know your student(s) and establish a good rapport. Questionnaires, surveys, board games such as 'Tell us about', Pass the ball or needs analysis are good ways of approaching the first lesson.
Another area of setting the right tone for a lesson are 'warmers', fun short activities designed to get your students into the mood for English.
The third part of the chapter deals with the challenges the teacher faces when working with a group of different ability level, and gives ideas on how to deal with them.
Next comes the situation of large classes, use of native language, reluctant students and difficulties with listening texts. Again, the common problems are discussed and ideas are being offered on how to approach and deal with the issues at hand.
