This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit covered pronunciation and phonology. It explained the rules of intonation, stress, and articulation within the English language. It went into a lot of detail on how different letters and joint letters are spoken in the English language by providing detailed diagrams of how our actual organs and parts of our mouth work together to produce the sounds. It also provided the phonemic alphabet. Out of all the units so far this one contained the most new information. As a native English speaker I have never actually thought about how I speak and how I know which words to stress or emphasise, where to change my pitch in a sentence and how I know how to make certain sounds with specific letters or letter combinations. It is quite interesting to realise that from the perspective of a non native English speaker knowing how to do all of these things is really challenging and takes a lot of practice and concentration. I hope that having learned this I now know some ways to help my students master pronunciation in English.
