I think this unit is a completely crucial one for anyone starting out to teach. I wish I had received this training or at least had this list of ESA techniques and models before I taught English in Lepan, Yucatan, Mexico two years ago. What’s fascinating to me is that I actually used many of these methods, not because I had been taught them but because they seemed the most logical methods to grabbing the children’s attentions and getting them motivated to absorb the grammar lesson of the day. I find the Engage and Activate portions of the ESA technique to be utterly crucial to the motivation of the students because I have firsthand witnessed the difficulties of trying to teach a language merely by recitation or teacher-centered lesson plans. When I was reviewing this unit, I was reminded of all the times I invented short games and even took the younger children outside to expend energy while learning animal names. Seeing more concrete models and examples here is a huge help as I face teaching English in Korea.
