Development and growth of the students should be the heart of every teacher. Out of this compassion and desire to see his/her students succeed, a teacher should also be a studier of the students - knowing and observing their cultures, fears, strengths, weaknesses, etc. This knowledge is what the teacher will use to craft and adjust lessons, so curriculums have the potential of changing year after year as no two classes are the same. Just as parents utilize different roles when raising children, so teachers must do the same in order to help facilitate growth/development in students. However, over-utilization of one type of role could lead to students losing motivation, plateauing in learning, and falling short of their growth. While a teacher may feel more comfortable in one type of role over another, it's important to remember that it's ultimately about the students' learning and growth NOT the teacher's comfort zone. This will challenge both the students and the teacher to grow - for learning is a lifelong process.
