This unit covered a variety of teaching methods over the past centuries. The most recent, the ESA format (Engage, Activate, Study) combines the positives of several of the previous teaching methods into the ESA method. For example, vocabulary drills, as used in Audiolingualism, can be an activity used in the study phase alternating with another activity like tongue twisters to assist the English language learner with proper pronunciation. The ESA method always begins with the Engage phase and ends with the Activate phase but it doesn't have to follow just the three steps of Engage, Study, Activate. The teacher can enhance a lesson as needed following a lesson plan such as, Engage, Study, Engage, Activate, Study, Activate. This type of format, the patchwork format, allows for flexibility and helps to prevent predictability and boredom. The ESA method has proven the most effective for language learners as it combines multiple methods, can be used in variation, and it requires students to communicate in the English language.
