This reminds me of the old “Goofus and Gallant†comics from Highlights for Children magazine. An example of what to do and what not to do. In the first lesson the teacher is awful. He says how easy it’s meant to be, and just uses jargon the students don’t know, he doesn’t engage the class, he writes on the board and turns away from the class frequently, has no rapport with the class. He expects them to just understand the work. He doesn’t know the student names, and it stops the lesson when he must ask. This lesson is boring and confusing.
In the second lesson the teacher establishes a rapport, uses games, and uses a level of English the whole class can understand. He makes the lesson fun and engaging, and teaches the class in a way that facilitates learning naturally. This teacher has the students write their names down for him to see so he can address them. He uses visual cues and body language, and prompts the students to answer on their own, instead of answering for them. Very effective!
