This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit talked about specifically teaching new language. The three main topics we need to be concerned about are grammar, vocabulary and language functions. In teaching new vocabulary, students need to know the meaning, appropriate usage, grammar usage, a word's interaction with other words, spelling and pronunciation. Similarly, for grammatical structures, students need to know the meaning, usage, different forms and patterns and the spoken versus written usage. Lastly, for language functions, students mainly need to be able to understand appropriateness.
For each one of these, the unit gave suggestions on different ESA techniques to maximize the students' interaction with the material. Also, a brief ESA lesson outline was given for each topic. It is suggested that teachers use straight arrow ESA structures for grammar and vocabulary classes while boomerang and patchwork ESA structures are better for language function lessons (though this is not a rule). A good teacher will be able to gage what is best for each lesson.
