This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Learning future tense is deceptively difficult. By deceptively, I mean that it seems to be simple with easy key words to look for, which is true to an extent. However, the usages for the tenses, especially where they overlap with present tense acting as future, can be almost arbitrary. Sometimes using a certain tense instead of the other can entirely change the tone of the statement or question. In other instances, using, for example, a going to future instead of a future continuous, doesn't seem to change the meaning at all. Trying to teach when to use one or the other can really just be up to personal preference or idiolects of the native speaker, which does not help an ESL learner who needs black-and-explanations, specifically when the ESL learners comes from an L1 that doesn't even bother with future tense in the first place. So while there are key words and phrases to help, and specifics for using tenses in such-and-such ways, so much of it is nuanced and vague, that teaching must be planned according to this knowledge.
