This unit covered the two of the four basic skills of any language. The first two (which this unit dealt with) are \"receptive skills\": reading and listening. The second two are \"productive skills\": speaking and writing. These are all equal in importance, and all should be included in some way during lessons, in a balanced way. Doing so creates an \"integrated\" skills lesson.
There are essentially two wide-ranging categories for reasons/motives for reading and listening. The two reasons for reading and listening are doing so for a purpose, or for entertainment.
There are also a number of \"specialist skills\" when reading or listening. This unit details the following ones: predictive skills, scanning (for specific information), skimming (to get the general idea), detailed information, and deduction from context.
If new or difficult language is present, it helps to pre-teach that before the listening or reading activity. Material should also be selected carefully as to encourage and give confidence to students.
