Unit 14 reviewed various classroom materials than can be utilised during a lesson. Materials can be classified as authentic and created. Authentic refers to those created by native speakers for native-speaker consumption e.g. magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus etc. Created materials are those that are produced especially for the classroom e.g. coursebooks, flashcards, crosswords, wordsearch, picture stories, role play cards, games etc. Authentic materials are not graded and need to be carefully selected to match the language ability of the class. Because such materials are used in real life they are often interesting and motivating to students. Coursebooks can be very helpful when teaching to provide a sense of continuity and structure but should be adapted to the class and not relied on alone. Content can be omitted, supplemented or adapted as required. Whilst students often expect a coursebook when studying it can also become boring if the class is not enhanced with other created and authentic materials.
