Receptive skills, reading and listening, are equally important. Students' reading skills can include: 1. Predictive skills, where they can tell what is going to follow the headline of an article. 2. Scanning skills, where they can find a specific bit of information without reading the entire document. 3. Skimming skills, where they are able to read and get the gist of a document without reading everything. 4. Detailed information, where they read through all of a document to get the maximum information. 5. Deduction of context, where they can tell what the text is trying to convey, looking beyond just the document itself to the surrounding context.
When teaching receptive skills, it is important to consider several things. The topic must be interesting to the students. The teacher can increase the student's interest in whatever topic during the engage phase. The language should not be too easy or too difficult for the class. The tasks should include increasing comprehension, rather than just checking comprehension.
