Unit 15, Evaluation and Testing, looks at different ways of evaluating student's levels and progress, as well as common external exams that a teacher may need to prepare his/her students for. The unit présents ways to assess a student's language level such as tutorials, evaluation by the students and different types of tests. In addition, a listing of some general external examinations such as TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) and Cambridge Assessments, is provided.
Studying this unit helped me to understand the importance of monitoring student's levels and progress. I especially appreciated the presentation of the four different types of tests available to the teacher to evaluate a student's English proficiency: 1) Placement and diagnostic tests (at the start of a class); 2) periodic progress tests (balance of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills); 3) practice tests before external examinations; and 4) achievement test (at the end of a course).
